Doing laundry is a chore that every independent person has to do at some point. Fortunately, it doesn't have to be difficult or extremely time-consuming. You'll want to prepare by gathering supplies and sorting your laundry, treat stains and add the right detergent, and choose the correct wash cycle and temperature for your load. Finally, you'll need to dry your laundry according to the fabric type of each item in your load.

Keep your dirty laundry in hampers according to your preference. Buy hampers or baskets to keep piles separated as you use your items, or use one main hamper and separate your laundry right before you wash it. How you choose to store your unwashed laundry will likely depend on how much space you have and if you have to leave your home in order to do your laundry.
Hampers come in various styles. Some have wheels or handles to make transportation easier; consider one of these if you will be moving yours around.
Hampers are also made from different materials. Choose a cloth one that folds up to save on storage space. Plastic ones often have handles that make them easy to carry; while wicker ones are often kept stationary and are more decorative.

Create piles of similar fabrics. It's wise to separate your fabrics into heavy fabrics and lightweight or thin fabrics. This way, you can choose the wash cycle that is appropriate for the type of fabric of your load.[1]

For example, create a heavy fabric pile that includes your jeans, heavy cotton sweatshirts or pants, jackets, and heavy workout clothing.
Create a different pile for lighter T-shirts, blouses, and thin pants.
Maintain a separate pile for delicates like lingerie, pantyhose, and silks, and other piles for towels and bed linens.

Separate your clothes into whites, lights, and darks. In addition to separating your laundry by fabric, you should also separate it by color to avoid having dark colors bleed onto whites or lighter colors. Create a whites pile that includes your white T-shirts, socks, underwear, and any other sturdy white clothing items.[2]
X
Research source
Create a separate pile of lights, which includes pastels like light blues and greens, yellows, and pinks.
Keep a separate pile of your dark clothing: anything black, grey, navy blue, red, or dark purple would go into this pile.

Use the normal setting for sturdy fabrics. The normal or regular setting on a washer usually means both the wash and rinse cycles spin fast. These settings are ideal for fabrics that are sturdy, like jeans, sweatshirts, and towels.[13]

The normal or regular settings also work well for clothes that are very dirty; just be careful that they are not delicate items with fine fabric or embellishments.
Some washers also have a heavy-duty setting; use this only for sturdy fabrics that are very dirty.

Use cold water most of the time. Most detergents are actually now designed to work best using cold water. In addition, most fabrics last longer if they are not exposed to heat. You can save money and energy by washing your clothes in cold water as opposed to warm or hot.[16]

Some people become concerned that germs will not be killed in cold water. However, your detergent does work on eliminating germs, as does the heat from the dryer if you dry your laundry on any heat setting, even low-heat.

Choose hot water only for very dirty laundry. If you're washing pillowcases and sheets used by a sick person, or muddy outdoor clothes or uniforms, use hot water if you wish. Hot water will fade colors over time, so you're better off not using it more often than absolutely necessary.[18]

Avoid using hot water on stained clothes or brand new colored clothing. Hot water can cause stains to set and colors to bleed.

Don't overfill the machine when you add your load. Most machines have instructions on filling or a fill-line right on the machine that you are not to exceed when putting items inside. Be sure not to cram more laundry in the machine than is recommended for your model.[19]

Overfilling your machine can cause your laundry to not clean properly, and over time, it can cause your machine to break.

Remove lint from the lint trap before drying each load. Find the lint trap on your dryer and check it for lint every time you use your dryer before turning it on. Slide the trap out of its position, and run your fingers over the lint to gather it up, then throw the lint in a trash can.[20]

Not removing lint before using a dryer can cause your dryer to catch on fire.

Use permanent press for most of your clothes and sheets. Dry shrink-prone materials on delicate or tumble-dry. The delicate setting uses low heat and a slower spin, and is ideal for items that may shrink or that could be easily damaged. Tumble-dry doesn't use any heat and should be used for items that are extremely delicate or likely to shrink.[24]

Alternatively, you can dry items by laying them flat on a towel, or using a drying rack. This helps reduce dry-lines or bumps that can occur on the shoulders of shirts when they are hung to dry.

Iron your laundry as needed and put it away. If you have items that become wrinkled in your laundry, use an iron and ironing board to remove the wrinkles. Be sure to read the care tag on your wrinkled item to see which heat setting to use, and set your iron to the correct temperature accordingly.
Put your laundry according to your preference when you are finished doing your laundry. Either fold it up and put it in drawers, or hang it in a closet, depending on the space you have at home.

How do you do laundry in the bathtub?

Check the labels on the clothing to find out what temperature of water is best. If you want to use hot water, make sure it’s not hot enough to scald your hands. Plug and fill the tub, pour in a little gentle detergent that’s made for hand washing, then put in the item(s) you’d like to wash. Swish them around with your hands in the water and gently squeeze them to work the soap and water through the fibers. Drain the tub and rinse the clothes with fresh water, then wring or squeeze out as much water as possible. Lay the clothes flat or put them on a line to dry.

Wear gloves and a mask while you handle the person’s laundry, and handle the clothes carefully so you don’t shake virus fragments into the air. Line the hamper or basket with a removable liner that you can wash or throw away between loads of laundry. Wash and dry the clothes on the hottest settings you can use without damaging them.

How do you do laundry in college?

If you live in a dorm or other student housing, there’s a good chance you’ll have access to a shared laundry room. To operate the machines, you’ll need either quarters or a laundry card that you can reload with cash. Bring your own supplies, such as a laundry basket, detergent, and dryer sheets (which reduce static and give your clothes a nice smell). Since the laundry room is shared, keep track of when your clothes are done so they don’t sit in the washer or dryer and prevent other students from using them!

Learning how to do laundry is not difficult. Today’s fabrics, detergents, and machines prevent most laundry mistakes. First, determine if every item of clothing needs to be washed; you can wear many items more than once.
Read the labels for washing instructions and follow these 10 basic steps and laundry hacks for washing clothes and you'll always have clean laundry.
The Spruce / Theresa Chiechi
01
of 10
Read the Labels
The Spruce / Erica Schroeder
Check the care labels on your garments and linens. They will tell you whether or not an item can be machine-washed. Also, every type of fabric has properties that determine how it reacts to heat, water, and cleaning solvents:
Care of Cotton Fabrics
Care of Synthetic Fabrics
Care of Wool Fabrics
Place all clothes that are labeled “wash separately” or “hand wash” into separate piles. If the label says, “dry clean only,” believe it and place it in a bag to take to the dry cleaner.
There's no need to risk damaging any special fabrics by trying to save time or money and tossing them in the washer. In the future, try to avoid buying delicate items if you prefer not to deal with special laundry care.
02
of 10
Sort the Laundry
The Spruce / Erica Schroeder
Start by sorting the laundry by color:
Whites, pastels, light grays, and white background prints will go in one pile.Deep-colored clothes—black, red, navy, brown, dark gray—go in another pile. Heavily soiled clothes should be washed separately.
03
of 10
Sort Again
The Spruce / Erica Schroeder
Sort each pile one more time by type of fabric. For instance, in the whites pile, separate towels, and sheets from apparel. In the dark colors, separate t-shirts and jeans from lighter-weight items like blouses and dress shirts.
Washing by fabric type allows you to use different water temperatures and keeps drying cycles simple. To reduce lint, never wash lint-producing fabrics and lint-attracting fabrics together!
If there are not enough items for a full washer load of each type of fabric and you are in a hurry, you can wash all items of each color together. Just be sure to choose the washer cycle to fit the most delicate garments in the load.

Select a Detergent
The Spruce / Erica Schroeder
Select an all-purpose laundry detergent; one with enzymes will provide the best cleaning results. Read the directions to determine how much to use based on the size of the load. Always measure your detergent.
Add the detergent to the washer drum or dispenser before loading it. This will prevent residue on your clothing.
If your clothes have stains, pre-treat them with a stain remover or a bit of laundry detergent before placing them in the washer.

Pick a Water Temperature and Cycle
The Spruce / Erica Schroeder
Unless your clothing is caked with dirt and heavily stained, washing in cold water will serve your needs and prevent most laundry disasters. The exception is cotton underwear and bedsheets that need hot water to remove body oil.
Bed linens and towels need to be washed at the highest recommended temperature at least every other wash to sanitize them.
You must also choose the best washer cycle for the type of fabrics in the load. The "normal" cycle will be fine for most loads, but you may also need to use "permanent press" or "delicate" for certain fabrics. "Heavy-duty" is great for articles like jeans and towels.

Do a Final Check
The Spruce / Erica Schroeder
Double-check everything before you load the washer to prevent mistakes. Look for any stains and pretreat them.
Certain types of stains require special techniques to remove them, while many can be handled with a spot treatment. There's also a proper approach for mystery stains when you're not sure what caused it.
Also, check that all pockets are empty—no tissues or paper, either—to prevent disasters. Remove any accessories such as belts and jewelry.
Close all zippers, VELCRO, and buttons to prevent them from catching the fabrics.

Load the Washer
The Spruce / Erica Schroeder
Load items into the washer one at a time, making sure they are not in a wad. Do not cram the washer too full. The clothes need room to move about in the water.
To protect fabric finishes and reduce the “washed out” look, turn knitted items, corduroy, textured fabric, and dark colors inside out.

Unload the Washer
The Spruce / Erica Schroeder
Promptly remove wet laundry from the washer to lessen wrinkles and prevent mildew. Hang items to air dry, lay flat to dry, or place them in the dryer.

Load the Dryer
The Spruce / Ana Cadena
If you did not separate loads by fabric type when washing, do it now before placing items in the dryer. It's important to dry all lightweight items together and all heavy fabric items together and choose the correct dryer cycle for each.
This will help prevent shrinking and protect your clothing. Add wool dryer balls to speed drying and reduce static.
There are many good reasons why you might consider air drying your laundry outside or on an indoor drying rack. Chief among those are saving energy (and money) and less damage to your clothes.

Hang, Fold, and Store Your Laundry
The Spruce / Erica Schroeder
As soon as your clothes are dry, you'll want to take care of them right away. Hang or fold each piece of clothing as it comes out of the dryer to prevent wrinkling. And, of course, iron your clothes if you must. As soon as possible, return clothes and linens to the proper closet or drawer.
Additional Laundry Tips
Mistakes happen. Everyone makes them but here's some help to save the day—or your favorite shirt.
Save a Shrunken Sweater
Remove Dye Bleeding
Save an Iron-Scorched Garment
Laundry is much less overwhelming if you do it frequently. If you let a mountain of dirty laundry accumulate, it can become scary. It may feel like a hassle to go to the laundromat, so find ways to make the trip better like using the time to read, relax, and enjoy the scent of your fresh laundry.

When it comes to determining laundry price per kilogram in the Philippines, several key factors come into play, shaping the pricing structure to meet the needs of customers and the challenges of the market:

Labor & Operating Costs
The cost of labor and the expenses associated with running a laundry shop in the Philippines significantly impact pricing. Factors such as wages, utility bills, rent, and equipment maintenance contribute to the overall operating costs that are factored into the price per kilogram.
Location
Geography plays a crucial role in setting laundry prices. Laundry services in prime urban areas typically have higher costs due to the increased cost of living and higher rent. Conversely, rural laundry shops in the Philippines might offer more competitive rates.
Type of Laundry
The nature of the laundry service you require is a key determinant. Basic laundry services, such as washing and folding, tend to be more affordable than specialized services like dry cleaning or the treatment of delicate fabrics, which require additional care and expertise.
Quantity and Weight
Larger and heavier loads generally cost more to process compared to smaller ones. Laundry shops in the Philippines typically charge by the kilogram to ensure a fair pricing structure.
Additional Services
Any supplementary services you request, such as stain removal, ironing, folding, or eco-friendly cleaning, will influence the final cost. These value-added services cater to specific customer needs and preferences, with corresponding pricing adjustments.
